Tropical Paradise
Daku Resort is set in seven acres of tropical gardens looking over Savusavu Bay on Fiji’s northern island of Vanua Levu. Behind it rise steep tree-covered hills. Wander up the hillside in the cool of the morning, or hike up the mountain directly behind Daku to watch the sunset. There’s a creek behind the resort too; you can walk up it to a small waterfall and dip your feet into the pools. If you’re quiet, you’ll catch glimpses of birds such as the wattled honey-eater, the Fiji parrot finch, the Polynesian triller and many others. Fiji has 87 species of breeding birds, and another 52 species who visit Fiji. We have counted 32 species on the lands of Daku Resort alone.
In front of Daku Resort there’s a road and on the other side is the sea. The beach is tidal, so it all but disappears when the tide is in – but there’s a deep water channel so you can always swim out to the pontoon, or take a kayak for a paddle. There’s a small reef with branch coral growths and multi-coloured fish – and if you want the spectacular snorkelling, you can hire our boat and go down to Split Rock and on to Lesciaceva reef outside the Jean Michel Cousteau resort. There you’ll find some of the world’s most abundant coral reefs teeming with multi-coloured fish and other forms of sea life. We can take you to shallow reefs with spectacular plate corals, to coral pinnacles topped with clouds of purple anthias and damsel fish, to deeper reefs with steep walls dropping away to 200 feet where you may see some of the larger species. The joy of Fiji lies in its clear, warm waters and the easy access to the sites; most of them are 15 – 25 minutes in a boat. It’s no small wonder that the world famous Jean-Michel Cousteau has a dive base in Fiji.
The bures are scattered around the grounds. In the centre is the swimming pool, and beside that is the big bure where you’ll find our bar and restaurant.
